Startup sectors

Data rooms for consumer and mobile app startups.

Consumer and mobile app investors look at engagement and retention first, then at monetisation and the cost of growth. Prepare analytics exports for daily and monthly users and cohort retention, subscription and in-app purchase data from the stores, user acquisition spend, app store account records and privacy compliance documents.

How it works for a startup.

Reviewers rebuild retention curves from analytics exports and compare them with your summary. They look at day 1, day 7 and day 30 retention, DAU to MAU ratio, subscription conversion and renewal, and how these vary by acquisition channel. Paid growth that lifts installs but not retention is a common concern.

Platform dependence is a legal and commercial risk. Apple and Google control distribution and take a share of in-app payments. Buyers check that developer accounts are held by the company, that the app follows store policies and that past rejections or removals are disclosed.

Privacy rules shape the business. Apps directed at children under 13 must comply with COPPA, several states have consumer privacy laws, and store privacy labels must match actual data collection. Attribution and advertising data practices get close review.

Investor Q&A

Set up the room in 6 steps.

  1. 1

    Export retention cohorts

Pull cohort retention from your analytics tool by install month and channel.

  2. 2

    Reconcile store revenue

Match store payout reports to booked revenue and note platform fees.

  3. 3

    Confirm account ownership

Make sure developer accounts are in the company's name, not a founder's personal account.

  4. 4

    List every SDK

Document third-party SDKs and what data each collects, and check that privacy labels match.

  5. 5

    Check privacy obligations

Review COPPA if children may use the app and state privacy laws for your users.

  6. 6

    Make it readable on phones

Many investors review on mobile; keep summaries short and the room usable on a phone.

Common mistakes.

  • Developer accounts held by a founder personally.
  • Privacy labels that do not match what SDKs collect.
  • Retention shown only for the best cohort or channel.
  • Revenue reported gross of platform fees without saying so.

Questions founders ask

Which consumer app metrics matter most?
Retention by cohort, engagement such as DAU to MAU, monetisation per user and the cost of acquiring users who stay.
Does COPPA apply to my app?
If your app is directed to children under 13 or you know you collect data from them, COPPA likely applies. Ask counsel to review.
Why do buyers check app store accounts?
Distribution depends on them. Buyers confirm the company owns the accounts and that there are no outstanding policy problems.
