How to read this list.

Each room gets a score out of 10 on five measures, and the weighted total decides the order. The weights favour what a founder feels most: how fast the room is ready (22%), how tightly access can be controlled (22%), what it costs a company that pays its own bills (20%), how investors experience it (18%) and how well it carries a long diligence list (18%).

The average score across all 17 rooms is 7.6. 13 of them list a question-and-answer module, which is the single feature most likely to save a founder time during a Series A or a sale.

Published price or quote

7 providers put a price on their website and 10 quote per project. Quote-based rooms are often the choice of banks and late-stage acquirers; published-price rooms are easier for a founder running the round alone. Our pricing guide sets them side by side.

Deck tools versus data rooms

Tools built for sending a pitch deck as a tracked link sit lower here because they lack Q&A, folder permissions or two-step login. They are useful before diligence; the room matters once a fund starts reading contracts.

Shortlist in four steps

  1. Pick your use case below and read its top three.
  2. Check the price basis and trial in the facts table.
  3. Load your real folder index into a trial room.
  4. Invite one friendly investor and ask how it reads.

Questions founders ask

What is the best data room for a startup?
On our five startup measures Ellty ranks first with 9.2 out of 10, followed by iDeals and Firmex. The right pick still depends on the round: compare the use-case lists for your stage.
Do I need a virtual data room for a seed round?
Not always for the first meetings, where a tracked deck link is enough. Once a lead fund asks for the cap table, contracts and financials, a room with permissions, watermarks and an activity log keeps the process orderly and shows you who is reading.
How much should a startup pay for a data room?
Published plans on our list start between $15 and $299 a month; 10 of the 17 providers only quote. Our pricing guide has a calculator for your months, seats and data size.
Can partners pay to rank higher?
No, partners cannot buy a position. Scores come from the published formulas on our methodology page.
How often is this ranking updated?
We recheck prices, trials and feature lists every month and rebuild the scores when a fact changes.
