Short version: we count visits to improve the guides, we never sell anything about you, and you can say no to analytics.

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Three kinds of data

  1. Visit statistics. Which pages were read, roughly where from (derived from the IP address), on what kind of device and browser, and the path through the site. This tells us which guides and calculators founders find useful.
  2. Messages to the editors. A message sent through our form reaches us with the name, email address, topic and text you typed.
  3. Things that never leave your device. Numbers typed into a calculator and ticks on the checklist stay in your browser. Checklist ticks sit in this browser’s local storage until you clear them.

Cookies

Analytics are on by default and easy to refuse. On a first visit a small notice offers “OK” or “No thanks”. Choosing “No thanks” is remembered in your browser: Google Analytics then runs without analytics cookies and PostHog does not start. Clearing this site’s stored data in your browser brings the notice back.

The services involved:

  • Google Analytics 4, configured with advertising storage switched off.
  • PostHog, hosted in the United States, for page statistics and session recordings in which every form field is masked.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless visit counter.

Purposes

Running the site, fixing what breaks, keeping it secure, improving the guides and replying to people who write in. Nothing is used for advertising profiles and nothing is sold or rented.

Retention

Visit statistics are kept for at most 14 months. Messages stay while a conversation is open and are deleted no later than 24 months after it ends.

Requests about your data

Wherever you live, you can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, or object to a use of it. Send the request through the editors’ form; you will hear back within 30 days.

Updates

When a tool or a practice changes, this page changes too, and the date under the heading moves.
