Startup sectors

Data rooms for space startups.

Space startups need regulatory approvals, launch access and government customers that most startups never deal with. Investors review FCC spectrum and satellite authorizations, NOAA remote sensing or FAA launch licences, launch and insurance contracts, export control compliance, government contracts and flight heritage data.

How it works for a startup.

A satellite company needs FCC authorization for its spectrum use, and remote sensing operators need a NOAA licence. Launch and reentry operators need FAA licences. Each approval has conditions, timelines and reporting duties, and investors check that the business plan fits within them.

Much space technology is subject to ITAR or the EAR. Technical data cannot be shared freely with foreign persons, which affects foreign investors, international customers and how the data room is set up. Many space companies keep controlled data out of the general room entirely.

Revenue often comes from government customers through contracts, SBIR awards and other transaction agreements. Reviewers read those for data rights, termination and funding status, along with launch manifests, satellite performance and insurance.

Set up the room in 6 steps.

  1. 1

    Screen investors for export control

Know which reviewers are foreign persons before giving access to any technical folder.

  2. 2

    Separate controlled data

Keep ITAR or EAR controlled data out of the general room or in a tightly restricted area that meets your compliance plan.

  3. 3

    Summarise licences

List each licence with conditions, expiry and reporting duties.

  4. 4

    Show launch status

Document manifests, contract terms and schedule history, including slips.

  5. 5

    Present flight heritage

Share on-orbit performance and anomalies openly; reviewers expect them.

  6. 6

    Use strong access controls

Named accounts, two-factor login and full audit logs for every folder.

Common mistakes.

  • Technical data shared with foreign persons without export review.
  • Business plans that need spectrum or licences not yet applied for.
  • Launch dates presented without schedule risk.
  • Government contract data rights not tracked.

Questions founders ask

Which US agencies license space activities?
The FCC for spectrum and satellite communications, NOAA for commercial remote sensing and the FAA for launch and reentry, among others.
Can foreign investors review a space startup?
Yes, but access to export-controlled technical data may require licences or must be restricted. Plan access with export counsel.
What is flight heritage?
The record of a component or system operating in space. Reviewers and customers give more weight to designs with proven flight history.
