Government contracts for startups.
Selling to the federal government means registrations, security standards and contract records that commercial customers never ask for. Keep SAM.gov and CAGE details, NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC documentation, FedRAMP status where relevant, past performance and every contract and modification in one controlled set, because investors and acquirers will review it too.

How it works for a startup.
Startups reach government customers through SBIR Phase III, other transaction agreements, GSA schedules, subcontracts under a prime contractor or direct contracts. Each path has its own paperwork, but all require active SAM.gov registration, and defense work usually requires a CAGE code and compliance with DFARS clauses on safeguarding information.
Defense contractors that handle controlled unclassified information must protect it under NIST SP 800-171 and report an assessment score in SPRS, and the DoD's CMMC program adds certification levels to contracts. Cloud products sold to civilian agencies often need FedRAMP authorization. Export rules under ITAR or the EAR can also apply to the technology itself.
When the company raises money or sells, government contracts get their own diligence: assignment rules, small business status and recertification after an acquisition, foreign ownership questions, and any audits or disputes. A clean contracts folder shortens that review.

- View-only and download control
- Set each file to view only, print or download, and change it later without resending anything.
- Two-step login
- Every login needs a one-time code or an app approval as well as the password.
- Viewer activity log
- Shows which investor opened which file, for how long and when, and exports the record.
- Dynamic watermarks
- Stamps the viewer email and the time across every page, so a forwarded screenshot points back to its source.
- Single sign-on
- Your team signs in with Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID or Okta instead of another password.
Set up the room in 6 steps.
- 1
Confirm what data you hold
First check if the company handles controlled unclassified information or export-controlled data. That decides where these files may be stored.
- 2
Keep registrations current
Track SAM.gov renewal dates, CAGE details and small business certifications in one folder with reminders.
- 3
File every contract action
Store each contract with all modifications in order. Reviewers check data rights and assignment clauses.
- 4
Document security posture
Keep the system security plan, assessment results and plan of action current and ready to share.
- 5
Limit access tightly
Use named accounts with two-factor login, block downloads and restrict export-controlled files to authorised US persons where required.
- 6
Prepare for change of ownership
Before a sale, review novation and size recertification rules with counsel.
Common mistakes.
- Storing controlled or export-controlled data in a system that does not meet the contract requirements.
- Losing track of data rights assertions, so the government gets broader rights than intended.
- A lapsed SAM.gov registration blocking a new award.
- Ignoring how an acquisition affects small business status on existing contracts.
